What is the best mattress for back pain?
One of the most common questions we hear every day at Mattress Gallery Direct in Murfreesboro, Franklin, and Smyrna is, “What’s the best mattress for back pain?” The honest answer is that there isn’t one mattress that’s perfect for everyone. The best mattress for back pain is the one that properly supports your body type, sleeping position, weight distribution, and existing health conditions.
Many people assume that sleeping on the firmest mattress available will solve their back pain. In reality, that’s often the opposite of what happens. A mattress that is too firm can create pressure points on your shoulders and hips, while a mattress that is too soft allows your spine to sag out of alignment. The goal is to maintain a neutral spinal position throughout the night.
At Mattress Gallery Direct, we’ve spent more than 40 years helping Middle Tennessee families find the right mattress. Our Certified Bedding Specialists receive extensive training from local physicians, chiropractors, and sleep professionals so we can properly fit each customer instead of simply selling the most expensive mattress.
For side sleepers with back pain, we often recommend premium hybrid mattresses that combine individually wrapped coils with advanced pressure-relieving comfort materials. The wrapped coils contour to your body’s curves while maintaining strong lumbar support. This reduces pressure on the shoulders and hips without allowing your spine to sink.
Back sleepers typically benefit from medium to medium-firm mattresses that provide excellent lumbar support while cushioning the natural curve of the lower back.
Stomach sleepers usually need a firmer support system to prevent excessive hip sinkage that can strain the lower spine.
Several mattress collections available at Mattress Gallery Direct are designed with spinal alignment in mind. Tempur-Pedic® mattresses conform precisely to your body’s shape for outstanding pressure relief. Stearns & Foster® combines IntelliCoil® technology with premium comfort materials to balance support and comfort. Helix® Hybrid Mattresses feature zoned support coils that reinforce the lumbar region, while our Spring Air Copper Hybrid and Legendaire Resort Collection mattresses offer reinforced center support systems designed to help reduce back fatigue.
An adjustable base can also make a tremendous difference. Elevating your head and feet slightly helps reduce pressure on the lower back while improving circulation and allowing your muscles to relax more naturally during sleep.
The biggest mistake we see people make is ordering a mattress online based solely on reviews. What works for someone in another state may not work for your body. That’s why we encourage customers throughout Murfreesboro, Franklin, Smyrna, Nashville, and all of Middle Tennessee to visit one of our showrooms and actually try different mattress models before making a decision.
When you’re properly fitted by an experienced sleep specialist, you’re far more likely to find a mattress that provides lasting comfort and better spinal support for years to come.
What is the best mattress for side sleepers?
Side sleeping is by far the most common sleeping position, but it’s also one of the most demanding on a mattress. Your shoulders and hips carry much of your body weight, creating pressure points that can cause pain, numbness, and frequent tossing and turning if your mattress isn’t designed to relieve that pressure.
The best mattress for side sleepers combines pressure relief with proper spinal support. A mattress that’s too firm creates painful pressure on the shoulders and hips. A mattress that’s too soft allows your body to sink too deeply, throwing your spine out of alignment.
That’s why hybrid mattresses have become one of our most recommended options for side sleepers at Mattress Gallery Direct. Individually wrapped coils contour independently to different parts of your body while premium comfort layers cushion pressure points.
Some of our favorite options include the Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt and LuxeAdapt collections, Helix Midnight Luxe and Midnight Elite, Stearns & Foster Estate Pillow Top, Spring Air Copper Hybrid, and our exclusive Legendaire Resort Collection.
Each of these mattresses offers excellent contour support while maintaining healthy spinal alignment throughout the night.
Body weight also plays a major role. Lighter sleepers generally need softer comfort layers, while heavier individuals often require stronger coil systems and denser foams to prevent excessive sinkage.
That’s why trying mattresses in person is so important.
Our Certified Bedding Specialists help customers throughout Murfreesboro, Franklin, Smyrna, and surrounding Middle Tennessee communities compare different comfort levels to determine which mattress truly fits their body—not someone else’s online review.
What is the best mattress for hot sleepers?
If you wake up sweating during the night, your mattress could be part of the problem.
While no mattress can magically lower your body temperature, today’s best cooling mattresses are designed to help regulate heat and improve airflow so you sleep more comfortably.
At Mattress Gallery Direct, we’ve found that the coolest mattresses combine several cooling technologies instead of relying on just one feature.
Tempur-Pedic’s Breeze Collection uses multiple cooling layers, heat-diffusing materials, and advanced phase-change technology to help sleepers stay noticeably cooler throughout the night.
Helix Elite and Luxe models feature GlacioTex Cooling Covers designed to pull heat away from the body while breathable hybrid coil systems increase airflow beneath the sleeper.
Spring Air Copper Hybrid mattresses utilize naturally conductive copper-infused materials combined with therapeutic gel foams and breathable bamboo covers.
Stearns & Foster incorporates luxurious natural fibers like wool, silk, TENCEL™, and cotton that naturally regulate temperature while improving moisture management.
The best cooling mattress also depends on your bedroom environment, bedding, and sleep habits.
If you’re a hot sleeper living in Murfreesboro, Franklin, Smyrna, or anywhere in Middle Tennessee, visiting one of our stores allows you to compare cooling technologies side by side before you buy.
How often should you replace a mattress?
A quality mattress is an investment in your health, but it won’t last forever. Most mattresses should be replaced every 7–10 years. Higher-quality mattresses made with premium materials can often provide excellent comfort and support for 12–15 years or longer. Rather than focusing only on age, pay attention to how your mattress feels.
Signs it’s time for a replacement include:
• Waking up sore every morning
• Visible sagging or body impressions
• Increased tossing and turning
• Poor edge support
• Sleeping better in hotels than at home
Lower-quality online mattresses often wear out much faster because they’re built with lower-density foams that soften prematurely. At Mattress Gallery Direct, we focus on brands known for long-term durability, including Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster, Helix, Sealy, Spring Air, Legendaire, and Capital Bedding.
If you’re unsure whether it’s time to replace your mattress, stop by one of our Murfreesboro, Franklin, or Smyrna locations. We’ll inspect your current sleep situation and help determine whether a replacement could improve your comfort and overall sleep quality.
How do I know if I need a new mattress?
Many people don’t realize how much their mattress affects their daily health until they finally replace it.
Here are some of the biggest warning signs:
• You wake up with back, shoulder, or hip pain.
• Your mattress has visible sagging.
• You notice deep body impressions.
• You hear squeaks or feel uneven support.
• You’re constantly tossing and turning.
• You sleep better almost anywhere else.
• Your mattress is more than 8–10 years old.
Even if your mattress still looks fine, the comfort materials inside may have broken down enough to reduce support. One of the easiest ways to tell is by visiting Mattress Gallery Direct and comparing your current mattress to today’s newest models. Many customers are amazed at how much better they feel after lying on a properly fitted mattress for just a few minutes.
Our non-commissioned Certified Bedding Specialists work with customers throughout Murfreesboro, Franklin, Smyrna, Nashville, and Middle Tennessee to match each person with a mattress that fits their body, sleeping position, and comfort preferences—not simply the highest-priced model.
If you’re questioning whether it’s time for a new mattress, chances are your body is already giving you the answer. A properly fitted mattress can improve sleep quality, reduce pressure points, support healthier spinal alignment, and help you wake up feeling more rested every morning.
What mattress firmness is best for me?
Choosing the right mattress firmness is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when shopping for a new mattress. It’s also one of the biggest misconceptions in the mattress industry. Many people believe that a firm mattress is always better for your back or that a soft mattress is only for comfort. In reality, the best mattress firmness depends on your body type, sleeping position, weight, and personal comfort preferences.
At Mattress Gallery Direct in Murfreesboro, Franklin, and Smyrna, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every person is built differently, which means the mattress that feels perfect for one person may be completely wrong for another. That’s why our Certified Bedding Specialists take the time to properly fit each customer rather than simply pointing them toward the most popular mattress.
Side sleepers generally benefit from a softer comfort level because it allows the shoulders and hips to sink just enough to relieve pressure while keeping the spine aligned. Back sleepers often do best with a medium to medium-firm mattress that supports the natural curve of the lower back. Stomach sleepers usually need a firmer mattress to keep the hips from sinking too deeply and placing stress on the lower spine.
Your body weight also plays a major role. A lighter person may experience a medium mattress as firm, while someone with a larger body type may feel that same mattress as too soft. That’s one reason online mattress quizzes often miss the mark—they can’t account for how different bodies interact with the same mattress.
Fortunately, today’s premium mattresses are available in multiple comfort levels. Whether you’re considering a Tempur-Pedic®, Stearns & Foster®, Helix®, Sealy®, Spring Air®, Legendaire®, or Capital Bedding mattress, there are options ranging from plush to extra firm that provide the same quality construction with different comfort feels.
The best way to determine the right firmness is to lie on several mattresses and compare how your body responds. At Mattress Gallery Direct, our non-commissioned Certified Bedding Specialists help customers throughout Murfreesboro, Franklin, Smyrna, Nashville, and Middle Tennessee find the perfect balance of comfort and support. Instead of guessing online, you can experience the difference for yourself and leave knowing you’ve chosen a mattress that truly fits your body.
Should I buy a memory foam, hybrid, latex, or innerspring mattress?
One of the first questions shoppers ask is which type of mattress is best: memory foam, hybrid, latex, or traditional innerspring. The truth is that each has its own advantages, and the right choice depends on your sleep needs.
MEMORY FOAM mattresses are known for exceptional pressure relief and body contouring. They reduce pressure on the shoulders, hips, and back while minimizing motion transfer between sleep partners. Tempur-Pedic is widely recognized as the leader in this category because of its proprietary TEMPUR Material, originally developed from NASA technology. If you want the ultimate in pressure relief and motion isolation, memory foam is hard to beat.
HYBRID mattresses have become one of the most popular choices because they combine the best qualities of foam and individually wrapped coils. The coils provide strong support, improved airflow, and easier movement, while the comfort layers deliver excellent pressure relief. Brands like Helix, Stearns & Foster, Sealy Hybrid, Spring Air Copper Hybrid, and Legendaire Resort Collection all feature advanced hybrid designs that perform exceptionally well for a wide variety of sleepers.
NATURAL LATEX mattresses are prized for their durability, responsiveness, and cooling properties. Latex is naturally breathable, highly resilient, and provides a unique buoyant feel. It’s a fantastic option for people who want pressure relief without the slower response of traditional memory foam.
TRADITIONAL INNERSPRING mattresses remain a good option for some shoppers, particularly those who prefer a firmer, more responsive feel. However, many modern hybrids have surpassed traditional innersprings by combining advanced wrapped coil systems with premium comfort materials that offer significantly better pressure relief and spinal support.
At Mattress Gallery Direct, we carry all of these technologies because no single mattress type is right for everyone. Our goal isn’t to steer you toward one category—it’s to help you compare them side by side and determine which one fits your body, sleep style, and comfort preferences. Visiting one of our Murfreesboro, Franklin, or Smyrna showrooms allows you to experience these differences firsthand before making an investment in better sleep.
Why does my new mattress feel different than the one in the store?
At Mattress Gallery Direct we are committed to providing the most factory fresh products. That means in most cases the mattress that we deliver has been made within a couple of weeks from when it is delivered. Like a new pair of shoes, a new mattress has to break in. The mattresses on the showroom have been broken in properly and is what your new mattress will feel like after some use. The more foam the mattress has, the longer the break-in period will be. My best advice is to follow the instructions given to you by the store associate you worked with.
What is Gel and why do I need it?
Gel has certainly taken the mattress industry by storm. Brands like Beautyrest, Sealy, Serta, Tempur-pedic, Novaform, Casper and Englander utilize gel in many of the models they produce. Even an old school design like the Stearns and Foster has jumped on board. One of the number one questions I am asked about gel mattresses and toppers is how do we as an industry know the benefits of gel with it being so new to the mattress world. While the gel material is new to mattresses, it is not new to other products. The shoe insole business has used gel for years for many of the same reasons it is used in many of the top brands. I’ll break it down into the two main reasons the mattress industry has adopted the technology.
The first reason for using gel in mattresses is the cooling affect it has. Many people are concerned with some of the newer foams sleeping hot. It is true that early in the memory foam mattress design the foam could trap a lot of body heat. Today’s memory foam products have engineered out the heat issues. However, the tests show that even on a temperature neutral mattress a person can still sleep hot. Studies show that the optimal temperature for your surroundings is approximately 68 degrees. Most people sleep hot with or without memory foam. The gel is put in the mattress to provide a cooling affect allowing the user to achieve an optimal sleeping temperature.
The second reason for gel is it has a pressure relieving benefit. This benefit is the main reason for its use in insoles of shoes. It performs so well with the arch of your foot and its pressure points the mattress industry believes that it can have a full body benefit.
The question remains to gel or not to gel. My advice is when purchasing a new mattress, the consumer should take advantage of the modern materials available to them. Do you have to have gel? The answer is no. My question is why not? It can turn a good mattress into a great mattress for a minimal increase in your investment. Everybody could use better pressure relief and studies show temperature can make a big difference in your quality of sleep.
What are the advantages of an adjustable base?
The adjustable base has been around for a long time. In the past it was reserved for people with major health and mobility issues. It transformed a bedroom into what looked like a hospital room. That has all changed in the last decade. Modern adjustable bases are designed to look like a regular piece of furniture and many will even fit into your existing furniture. That means anyone can benefit from a power base without any change to their current bedroom. The mattress industry has also realized the importance of the adjustable base and are designing most of their models to work on a power base. Many consumers are buying bases simply because they want to be able to read, work and watch TV more comfortably from their bed. You don’t have to suffer from a specific health issue to reap the benefits of being able to customize the head and foot of your mattress. Many health professionals agree that the only way to achieve zero gravity posture is to elevate your head and feet. The Zero Gravity posture is the most ergonomic sleeping posture for your body. The adjustable base has been proven to help with ailments including sleep apnea, acid reflux and a whole range of neck and back issues. Many bases also offer additional features like massage, memory functions and app compatibility that tracks your sleeping habits and quality. So whether you are looking for a base that simply lifts the head and feet, or a system with all the bells and whistles available, Mattress Gallery Direct has the base for you. Our associates are trained to help you find a base that fits your current mattress or a mattress base combo that will work for your health and lifestyle needs.
Why can’t I sleep?!
There are many reasons why someone might be struggling to fall asleep and stay asleep all night long. Here are some common issues that cause a lot of trouble with sleep.
Caffeine
While caffeine in moderation is not terrible, it can cause issues with your sleep cycle if consumed too close to bedtime. Experts suggest a cutoff time of 4:00 for any caffeine consumption.
Sleep APNEA
More and more people are having personal sleep studies done because of lack of healthy sleep. What many Americans have found is that they suffer from a condition called Sleep APNEA that blocks the airways while sleeping. This will in fact disrupt your sleep and may cause other severe health problems. If you think that you could have this condition you may want to visit a doctor or sleep specialist ASAP.
Alcohol
If you are accustomed to having a little night cap before you retire, you might reconsider. Studies have shown that while alcohol can aid in helping you fall asleep, it has very negative effects on staying asleep. It can interrupt your whole REM sleep cycle. Just like the coffee, you should consider refraining from alcohol use too close to bedtime.
Too Much Blue Light
Believe it or not, your very own smart phone might be disrupting your sleep. TV also has the same effect. The mind stimulation is bad enough. But the light from these devices can disrupt your circadian rhythm. Winding down is vital to get comfortable enough to fall asleep. Do yourself a big favor and put the smartphone and TV to bed. Pun intended. You will do much better to just relax and let the natural process take place.
Old Worn Out Mattress
You knew it was coming. How could we discuss sleep inhibitors without mentioning a key component in getting the best sleep of your life? Your worn out, crusty old mattress could be the only thing standing between you and that heavenly sleep experience you are after. Working in this industry for many years has been an interesting experience. I have seen the simple act of purchasing a new quality sleep system change thousands of lives. That is the type of thing that will get you excited to get up in the morning and start the day. I have found that when a person realizes that a mattress is not a want but rather a Need Indeed, they start to take the process of selecting the right one seriously. If you have no idea where to even start, I will list below what I have found to be the absolute best quality mattress companies.
Tempur-Pedic, Sealy Posturepedic, Stearns and Foster, Jamison Marriott Mattress, Wellsville Malouf, Hastens mattress, Vi Spring, E.S. Kluft, Duxianna, Easman, and Magniflex. (Some of these are not available in the U.S)
The best way to start is to find a local mattress store and speak with a sleep consultant. If you are in the Nashville area I suggest us, Mattress Gallery Direct. We service Murfreesboro, Smyrna, Antioch, Manchester, Woodbury, Franklin, Brentwood, Coolsprings, Greenhills, Thompson Station, Spring Hill, Columbia and several others in Middle Tennessee.
Why does it matter if a salesperson works on commission or not?
First off, working on commission is not a bad thing. However, we feel that the most expensive mattress isn’t always the right model for every customer. In a commission-based atmosphere the salesman may be compelled to point the customer in the direction of a model that is not right for them simply because they make more money. At Mattress Gallery Direct we want our associates to focus only on the needs of the customer and not be distracted by their own financial needs. We promise that you will be given an honest assessment of your needs and only shown products that will address the issues you share with us. If you need a pillow top you will see our best selection of pillow tops. The same goes for firm, plush, cushion firm and all foam latex and gel memory foam. We maintain an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) with the philosophy of putting our customers needs first.
How much should I spend on a quality mattress?
A mattress is one of the most important investments you’ll make for your health. After all, you spend about one-third of your life sleeping, so choosing the right mattress can affect everything from your energy level to your overall well-being.
The amount you should spend depends on your budget, but it’s important to think about value rather than simply the purchase price. A lower-priced mattress that needs to be replaced after only a few years often ends up costing more over time than a premium mattress that provides lasting comfort and support for well over a decade.
At Mattress Gallery Direct, we offer quality mattresses at a wide range of price points. Queen-size mattresses begin around the $700 range with options like Capital Bedding, while premium collections from Sealy, Helix, Spring Air, Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster, and Legendaire provide increasingly advanced materials, cooling technologies, and durability as you move up in price.
Instead of asking, “What’s the cheapest mattress?” it’s better to ask, “Which mattress gives me the best value for my sleep needs?” Features like premium cooling covers, zoned support systems, higher-density foams, reinforced edge support, and longer-lasting materials often justify the additional investment because they improve both comfort and longevity.
We also offer financing options that allow many customers to invest in a better mattress without having to compromise on quality.
If you’re shopping for a mattress in Murfreesboro, Franklin, Smyrna, or anywhere in Middle Tennessee, our Certified Bedding Specialists will help you compare options at different price levels so you can choose the mattress that provides the best long-term value for your budget.
Do I have to buy a new box spring with a new mattress?
The answer is no. You do not have to buy a box spring. The better question to ask is should I buy a new box spring with my new mattress. That question is not as cut and dry. First you should assess if your bed requires one. Many modern furniture designs are built in a platform style that does not require a box spring. If your furniture requires a box spring then it is best to get a matching box spring. Most manufacturers do not warranty their products on another brands box. They also will not warranty a mattress that has been placed on an old box spring. If your current mattress needs to be replaced then your current box spring is just as old and has just as much wear.
What is the difference in a Mattress Pad and a Mattress Protector?
There is a huge difference between these two products. There is also a lot of confusion about it too.
Mattress Protectors:
A mattress protector is used to keep the mattress sanitary. Many of the modern protectors are Water Proof, Hypoallergenic and Anti-Microbial. The best part is that new technology has greatly improved the breathability. Another benefit is that a protector will not change the feel of the mattress.
Mattress Pads:
Mattress pads are usually water proof. They will also add a padding layer that can greatly change the feel of the mattress. If you have spent time and money on a mattress that you love the feel of a mattress pad will alter the firmness of the mattress by making it softer.
At Mattress Gallery Direct we recommend a Protector over the Pad because we want the mattress you choose in the store to feel the same in your home. A Mattress Pad will change the comfort of the mattress.
